Artist Statement
My overall work revolves around the subject matter of myth and symbolism. The works are mostly narrative because of their imagery and illustrative quality. My inspiration comes from artists like Audrey Beardsley, M.C Escher, Albrecht Durer, and Erete. All three emphasized the surreal and narrative in their works. They also help make aware to the audience the boundaries of human interaction and nature. What I draw from these inspirations is the sense of human conflict and the journey that a character goes through to find that answer or lesson in life. In the end, they evolve into a changed person.
In my earlier work, I enjoyed playing with detail and color harmonies. Printmaking gave me the same abilities to concentrate on scenery and tonality of the composition, while aiding in conducting intricate details and exotic imagery with negative space. This experimentation helped me develop myself as an illustrator using linocut not only because of its drawing and relief quality, but because its historical significance in the printmaking process with illustration. It is also a rewarding medium of hard labor and effort in creating intricate line work. The characters that I include are often mythical creatures, heroes, and iconic symbols. The two dimensional quality of my prints and drawings further emphasize this powerful narrative. What draws me to genres like myth is their ability to narrate about the human condition in matters such as identity, inner struggle and finding acceptance with themselves and their reality
What I want to explore from my artwork is the exotic design work and the depths of the imagination. In my process as an artist and story teller, I want to explore key factors into what makes a story or image impactful to the viewer, in terms of memory. These themes are often expressed by using symbols to communicate vast emotions and meanings. Nature is an important part of this communicative process in my art because it expresses the struggles and turbulence of other heroes or important figures. I believe this aspect is important because it helps relate to our own personal journeys and turbulence. Each of these themes connects to each other to create a unified form of imagery. I want to express strong emotional and human quality to individual characters, in which they find this motivation of self-truth and confidence that enlightens their view of the world and evolves into a stronger person. In the end, my artwork and storytelling becomes a way for me to express humility into human faults and to understand how we cross in these cultural barriers.
